Hello/สวัสดี from Bangkok, Thailand!
I always love travelling to new destinations, so I was thrilled to see BKK on my roster this month. I’ve never been to Thailand before, and I can honestly say that I couldn’t have had a better time!
We landed on a Friday evening, which worked out perfectly for everyone. The second the crew got to the hotel, we headed out to Khao San Road to make the most of our night in the city. The 1km strip is often referred to as “the centre of the backpacking universe” given the amount of tourists that flock to the area to take in the bars and clubs, restaurants, massage parlours and market shops.
Our first stop was Hippie De Bar (by crew recommendation). From there, we hopped around from place to place. Unfortunately, as carefree as the vibe is in the area, we managed to get kicked out of one bar because I brought a balloon inside that I had bought off a street vendor. Apparently, they aren’t permitted in many buildings (including the hotel we stayed at) because some vendors sell them with laughing gas (nitrous oxide, a kind of drug you inhale) inside of them, instead of helium. That freaked me out a little bit!
The following morning, I enjoyed breakfast with a friend at the Silicon Valley restaurant near our hotel. From there, we walked around a nearby marketplace and did some shopping. Bangkok is notorious for selling affordable clothing, so of course I ended up walking away with more items than I needed. I don’t regret purchasing the infamous elephant pants, though. In fact, I regret only buying one pair!
Next Stop: Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.
