Layover Life: Dublin, Ireland

This week I had the privilege of crossing off another ‘bucket list’ destination- Dublin, Ireland! I’ve wanted to visit this country for while because of my Irish roots, so I’m glad Emirates flies here twice daily.

We arrived at the hotel fairly late at night and decided to grab a bite to eat together before settling in for the evening. After speaking to a few locals, the crew and I ended up at a small family owned kabob restaurant. The food was amazing, but unfortunately I cannot recall the name of the establishment. We didn’t stay out too long because most of us had plans for the following day, but I do regret not grabbing a pint of Guinness from its motherland!

The next morning, some of the crew managed to have breakfast in the hotel lobby together. This is usually a rare occurrence, because oftentimes crew like to sleep in. (No judgement though, we need all the rest we can get with this job)!

From there, a few of us decided to hop in an Uber and head out to the village of Howth, Ireland. It was recommended to us by the Irish Cabin Crew on board, and is quite the popular tourist destination.

There are plenty of places to eat and tons of things to do in Howth, but with a 24 hour layover we only had a few hours to do some sight-seeing before heading back to the city. We chose to walk around the Harbour Front and hike up through the Howth Cliffs before coming back down for lunch.

We dined at a place called the Brass Monkey (another Cabin Crew recommendation), which is known for it’s fresh seafood and tasty tapas. The European style restaurant and wine bar serves fish directly from the harbour and has daily specials in addition to their menu, each of which are inspired by their catch of the day. If you’re looking for a casual dining experience in Howth, I would definitely recommend this place.

Following lunch, we decided to make our way back to the hotel. We hopped on the metro which was conveniently located at the Harbour Front, and went on our way. It took us about 30 minutes to get to the city centre from Howth, and an additional 20 minutes to get back to the hotel from our arrival station.

Overall Dublin, Ireland was a pleasurable experience. From the crew who accompanied me to Howth, to the warm and welcoming nature of the Irish people, I will definitely bid to operate this flight again!

If you go: Take transit during rush hour if you plan on visiting Howth or making your way around downtown Dublin. The city was basically in a gridlock when we were heading back around 4pm, so we saved ourselves a lot of time commuting. Taxis are also quite expensive in Ireland, which is why we stuck to Uber in the morning. (It costed us about €55 to go from our hotel to Howth).
