Layover Life: Brazil and Argentina

After almost 3 years, I finally made it to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! This trip is a multi-sector for our crew, meaning that we operate several flights together with the same team over the course of a few days.

Our first flight on this route was from Dubai, United Arab Emirates to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We landed around 4:00pm local time, and decided to get the crew together for Brazilian BBQ! One of our supervisors was from Brazil, and took us to a place called Torão Grill. Following our dinner, we decided to crash at the hotel because six of us had an early morning wakeup call. We were going to do what all crew do when in the city: tandem hang glide off of Sao Conrado!

Our guide Alexandre met us in the early morning and took us on the adventure of a lifetime. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared, but it was totally worth it. We landed on the beautiful Praia do Pepino beach where we got to enjoy some açai bowls while we waited for the rest of the crew to land. I ended up having 4 bowls of this delicious frozen fruit while visiting Brazil, and I have no regrets about it.

Following our time there, we operated a short flight to Bueno Aires, Argentina. Our stay in here was amazing too. We were blessed with amazing weather, and decided to go on a self-guided tour of the city based on the recommendations from a local crew and our hotel concierge. We walked around Recoleta and visited the world renown La Recoleta Cemetery. It contains the graves of several well known individuals that include: Eva Perón, presidents of Argentina, Nobel Prize winners, the founder of the Argentine Navy, and a granddaughter of Napoleon. Built around the church, Our Lady of Pilar (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Pilar), the site contains 4691 vaults, all above ground, 94 of which have been declared National Historical Monuments by the Argentine government.

After that, we moved onto La Boca and ate lunch at a place called La Barrica Restaurant & Bistro. There was a really famous football match going on at the time we were there (Boca Juniors vs River Plate), so many people were celebrating! It was fun to see everyone on the streets and having a good time.

Following a quick nap, we made our way back to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This time we landed around midnight and went straight to sleep for yet another early morning wakeup call. Instead of hang gliding a second time, we were ready for a tour of the city! Our amazing guide, Livia from Rio Crew Tours, took us everywhere we wanted to go! This included: Christ the Redeemer, Escadaria Selarón, Olympic Boulevard, Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí, Copacabana Beach, and of course, the Havaianas store! (A cabin crew’s best friend).

After 24 hours, it was time to head back to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

I don’t mind multi-sectors, but it’s not the destinations that make them great- it’s the crew! I was very fortunate to spend five days with such an incredible group of people, and I hope I’ll get the chance to fly with them all again soon.
